Meet Tadashi Iwamoto at “Tokyo’s waterfront,” which continues to take on challenges to become a world-class destination.
Tadashi Iwamoto believes that urban waterfronts are appealing spaces offering a sense of liberation. Come and discover the vision for what Tokyo’s waterfront can and should become.
Importance of waterfront
I came to believe that, to unlock the full potential of Tokyo as a city, it was essential to revitalize its waterfronts. They formed the core of urban life up until the early modern period, serving as hubs of food culture, art, and commerce. These places appeal to human emotions existing without or across boundaries.

A place of liberation, the waterside
They offer the opportunities to feel the presence of nature—the movement of wind and water, the quiet breath of living things. They also offer us unowned spaces in the urban human society and a rare moment of release from the city’s hectic, demanding pace and systems.

How to enjoy the waterfront
Simply relax and gaze at the rippling water with someone close and dear to you, sharing the richness of that peaceful time. If you have a delicious coffee or a drink to accompany you, that moment will surely feel even more elegant and refined.
